The complete guide to estimation

Run live Planning Poker with your team — everyone picks a card around a shared table, you reveal together, and the average appears instantly. Guests join by link or QR with no signup. This guide covers the full flow and every control.

Walkthrough + full reference

Estimation rooms are public by link — anyone you share the link with can join and vote, signed in or not. Only the owner (the person who created the room) can reveal, hide, reset, set the topic, and manage saved stories. Live presence and the current round's votes are real-time; every story you reveal is saved automatically.

Walkthrough · Step 1

1 · Create a room & pick a deck

From the dashboard, open the Estimation tab and click New Estimation. Give the room a name and choose a card deck — then Create & Open.

1

Name it, choose a deck, open it

The deck decides which cards everyone votes with. Pick the scale your team already thinks in — you can run different rooms with different decks.

Figure 1 · New Estimation Room — a name and a card deck is all it takes
Opening a room navigates to its shareable address (/estimation/<id>). That URL is the invite — anyone with it can join.
Walkthrough · Step 2

2 · Name the story you're sizing

2

Set the topic so everyone's voting on the same thing

At the top of the room, the owner types what's being estimated — a ticket id and a short title work well. It syncs live to everyone and is stored with the saved story when you reveal.

iOnly the owner can edit the topic; everyone else sees it update in real time. Leave it blank for a quick ad-hoc estimate.
Walkthrough · Step 3

3 · Invite the team — by link or QR

Press Share to copy the room link, or show the join QR for people in the room to scan. There's no signup wall for guests.

3

Guests choose a name; members sign in

When someone opens the link they see the join screen. They can sign in as a member (their Votenir identity) or just continue as a guest with a display name — no account needed.

2Join QR — the owner toggles whether the QR is shown to everyone (hidden by default). Great for in-person rooms and screenshares.
3Up to 250 participants per room. The 251st person to join sees a "room is full" screen.
Walkthrough · Step 4

4 · Everyone votes

4

Pick a card — it stays hidden until the reveal

Each person taps a card from the deck. Your pick is private: others only see that you've voted, never what you picked, until the owner reveals. Changed your mind? Tap another card any time before the reveal.

Walkthrough · Step 5

5 · Reveal & read the result

5

Flip every card at once — see the average and the spread

When the room has voted, the owner presses Reveal Cards. A short countdown flips every seat together, the average of the numeric votes appears in the centre, and the distribution shows how the votes split. If everyone picked the same real number, Votenir fires a little celebration.

🎉Unanimous agreement celebrates — when two or more people all pick the same real estimate, confetti/fireworks fire once for that round.
Walkthrough · Step 6

6 · Hide, reset & the next story

6

Discuss, re-vote, or move on

After a reveal you have two owner moves:

ControlWhat it does
🙈 Hide CardsUndo the reveal and flip the cards back face-down, keeping everyone's votes. The story that reveal saved is removed. Use it if you revealed by accident, or to discuss and let people change their pick — reveal again to re-save with the latest votes.
↺ Reset BoardClear all votes and the topic to start the next story fresh. Your saved history is untouched.
Set a new topic, let the team vote, reveal again — repeat for each backlog item. Each reveal adds one entry to the room's saved stories.
Walkthrough · Step 7

7 · Saved stories & the dashboard

7

Everything you reveal is kept — in the room and on your dashboard

Open the Saved estimations panel in the room to review every story you've revealed: its topic, the average, and how the votes were distributed. The owner can delete any saved story.

Figure 6 · Saved estimations — votes collapse to a value→count tally so big rooms stay readable

Back on the dashboard, the Estimation tab lists every room you've created — with its deck and story count — so you can reopen one to keep estimating, or delete it. Deleting a room removes it and all its saved stories permanently.

What persists vs. what's live: rooms and revealed stories are saved durably. The current round's live votes and who's present are ephemeral — they clear when the room empties, but your saved stories remain and reload next time you open the room.

8 · Card decks

Choose a deck when you create the room. Every deck includes ? (unsure); the number decks also include ☕ (break). These non-numeric cards never count toward the average.

DeckCardsBest for
Fibonacci 123581321?☕ The classic planning-poker scale — gaps grow with size so big items don't get false precision. A good default.
T-Shirt Sizes XSSMLXLXXL? Fast, relative sizing when you don't want numbers yet. (No numeric average — you read the spread and agree on a size.)
Sequential (1–10) 123…10? A simple linear scale when your team prefers plain 1-to-10 scoring.

9 · Table layouts

The room has two visual styles for the same session — switch any time with the layout toggle. Your choice is remembered on your device; it's purely cosmetic and doesn't change how voting works.

LayoutFeel
Meaningful Table (default)A poker-felt table with seats around the ring. Reveal runs a short countdown, the cards flip in sequence, and outliers are highlighted against the group.
Consensus ArenaAvatars orbit a glass centre and, on reveal, cluster together by the value they chose — so agreement (and disagreement) is visible at a glance.

10 · Owner controls

Only the room's creator sees these. Everyone else just votes and watches the result.

11 · People & identity

Members vs. guests

Members join with their Votenir account; guests join with just a display name — no signup. Everyone can vote; only the owner has the controls above.

Two people, same name

Each participant is tracked by a durable identity, not their name — so two people who both type “Chetan” stay separate seats and vote independently. The second one is shown as Chetan II, the third Chetan III, and so on, so the roster is never ambiguous.

Capacity & presence

A room holds up to 250 participants; beyond that, new joiners see a "room is full" screen. Presence is live — if someone drops off briefly they can rejoin and keep their seat. Opening the same room in a second tab doesn't create a second seat.

Good to know

12 · FAQ

Do guests need an account?

No. Anyone with the room link can join with just a display name and vote. Only the owner needs an account (to create the room and use the controls).

Can someone see my card before the reveal?

No. Until the owner reveals, the server only shares that you've voted — never your value. Picks are revealed to everyone at the same moment.

How is the average calculated?

It's the mean of the numeric votes only, rounded to one decimal. ?, ☕ and T-shirt sizes are excluded. If no one picked a number, there's no average to show.

I revealed by accident — can I undo it?

Yes. Press Hide Cards: the cards flip back, everyone's votes are kept, and the story that reveal saved is removed. Reveal again when you're ready and it re-saves with the latest votes.

What happens to a room after everyone leaves?

The live round (current votes and presence) clears, but every story you revealed is saved and reloads next time you open the room. Rooms stay on your Estimation dashboard until you delete them.

Can I change the deck after creating a room?

The deck is set when the room is created. For a different scale, create a new room with that deck.
